Students Support Memorial for Fallen.

Wednesday, April 6, 2005
Dedham High school students are playing an important role in helping to connect athletes and the public with the fallen heroes of Afghanistan and Iraq this week.

Students in  Dr. Michael Maram's junior history honors class have been compiling the names, rank, and hometowns onto a database which will be used to print the name of each of the hundreds of men and women who have died during the last two years on to the competitor numbers of the estimated three thousand runners taking part in the James Joyce Ramble on April 24.

Runners will be asked to dedicate their 6 mile run on Sunday, April 24 to the memory of that individual whose name they will wear and will be able to access information about the soldier on the race website.

James Joyce Ramble managing director Martin Hanley said today that he was grateful for the students involvement  with  the  "Memorial Project" and he noted that perhaps some of the students are considering careers in the military after high school which make their involvement that much more poignant.  “This program is designed to reach out across political lines.  We are a divided nation over the direction this administration’s foreign policy but we have to honor the sacrifice of men and women who serve to protect the constitution that allows us to freely debate its merits.”

The 22nd annual James Joyce Ramble is on Sunday, April 24 at the Endicott Estate in Dedham, MA.  Information at ramble.org or 781 686 1500.
