Running to To Remember/ A college Paper

By Liz De Lize Saturday, April 23, 2005
On the last Sunday in April for the past twenty-one years, the ten-kilometer road race known as the James Joyce Ramble has been held in Dedham, Massachusetts.  This year will be the fifth time that I have participated, and I have many reasons for doing so.  First is that running is a good type of exercise.  I enjoy the refreshed feeling that I am left with after a long run.  Also, the James Joyce Ramble is an event that Dedham citizens take much pride in.  Rain or shine, many people will come out and line the course to cheer runners along.  Along the route are actors that dramatically read passages from novels by James Joyce.  At the end of the race, there is a large barbecue offering a variety of foods.  For entertainment, there will be a band that plays Irish tunes.  As a Dedham citizen, I enjoy how runners come from all over the world to be part of the Dedham community for a day.  Finally, this year will be one that many will hold close to their hearts.  Most importantly, I will be honoring an American soldier who has lost his life in the War in Iraq by wearing his name on my shirt.  Though I may not be assigned his name, I will remember Jeff Burgess, a friend that was killed in action last year. As I struggle through the course, I will forget my pain and remember others. My battle of running the course is a small price I pay as a runner.  The soldiers killed in the War in Iraq paid a bigger price; they gave their lives.
