Yet another chapter opens for the event regarded as pleasantly off-center and arguably one of the most popular running events in the country featuring actors reading Joycean prose as thousands of runners breeze by, a literary trivia challenge at the awards ceremony and some of the most talented athletes in spirited competition on April 30.
The Jaames joyce Ramble has been featured in the pages of national and regional magazines such as Sports Illustrated, Runner’s World, Yankee Magazine, New England Runner, and in daily newspapers such as the New York Times, Boston Globe, Boston Herald, The Christian Science Monitor, Patriot Ledger and Community Newspapers. It’s been covered in feature stories on ESPN Sports Television, National Public Radio’s "Morning Edition", New England Sports Network and by a host of Boston metropolitan area tv and radio stations.
The event was voted in a MetroSports’ magazine reader’s poll "The most popular 10K race in the Northeast." It is well known by the general public for its ideals and values and it is enjoyed by thousands as a family event with a walk and a very popular children’s race hosted by a nationally renowned children’s book author.
The James Joyce Ramble is the only athletic event in America that has been recognized in the United States Congressional Record for its values and its human rights initiatives.
All proceeds from the Ramble are donated to the Claudia Adams-Barr Program for basic cancer research at the Dana-Farber Institute in Boston. The race has raised nearly $350,000 for innovative research programs at the respected research institute since 1984. The Ramble Collaborative supports other community programs and charities throughout New England.
The James Joyce Ramble is a charity-driven event of a nature not offered anywhere else in the world, fully integrating the elements of culture, literature and athletics.
In its second decade, it is known throughout the world. Among its attractions is the scenery and ambiance of the course where each mile is named for a literary work by James Joyce, with costumed professional actors all along the way interpreting these works with staged readings accompanied by traditional music of the British Isles.
The venue of this respected 10-kilometer road race and fitness walk is in the historic New England town of Dedham, adjacent to Boston. Dedham is the government seat of Norfolk County. The race by tradition is always held on the final Sunday of April. Ramble participants are college educated professionals who are drawn from all over the country by the event's reputation as a grand spectacle of a race sanctioned by USA Track & Field and conducted on a certified 6.2 mile pretty nd rolling course with records held by Olympic medal winners.
