Home Front Family Program Tuesday, March 18, 2008 For its Twenty-Fifth Anniversary, the James Joyce Ramble wants to honor American service men and women who are deployed overseas. The noted running event, named for the great Irish author and held in historic Ted Mulvehill, 28-year veteran advocate, past State President of the Mass Veterans' Service Officers Association and presently a Sub-Committee Member of the Governor's Advisory Council on Veterans' Affairs, endorses this gesture: "The Ramble has found a wonderful way to honor those who are serving abroad. To offer the children of our troops the ability to run this race free of charge honors the soldier, but importantly, honors the family as well." Race organizers wanted to make clear that one American town recognizes the sacrifice that these military families have had to make over these past several years. To participate in the April 27 event, children of our service men and women fighting abroad must be 18 years of age and under on Saturday or Sunday. Proof of a parent’s active duty status must be provided and verified at the registration. There is also a walk and a children's run where all will also be welcome. State Representative Paul McMurtry, who serves on the Joint Committee of Veterans and Federal Affairs, said, “This is an fitting tribute to the soldiers and their families, both past and present, that through their efforts and commitment, have allowed all runners, including those participating in the 25th Anniversary of this great event, the freedom to run in the streets of our great country.” The James Joyce Ramble has been nationally acclaimed as an event that marries competition with theatrical flair. It is also one of the only sporting events dedicating itself to the cause of literary freedom and human rights. As a charity event, the Ramble has raised over $400,000 for cancer research at the Dana- Farber since 1984. For further information, please contact us at 781 329 9744, or write to us at: |
