Runner's World Guide to Great Races
By Bart Yasso, Staff Writer Friday, April 16, 2004 On Offer: Eight Great Races, from the 5-K to the half marathon. They’re fun, scenic, motivating and we’re sure there’s one near you.
From readers who were there.
This one is a riot. It’s run in Dedham, Massachusetts, a wooded suburb of Boston, and it features more than 30 actors along the course dressed in early 20th century garb who read from several of Joyce’s stories.(someone always reads aloud from his favorite short story “The Dead” near the race finish. How fitting!) The race is out-and-back, and attracts about 3000 runners each year. Some pay little attention to the readers, while others pause and listen for a minute at each reading point. By the way, the race is accepting offers from actors interested in reading. As the race web site says, “It’s the only theatrical event where the actors stand perfectly still and the audience is moving."
