POETRY IN MOTION IN JOYCE EVENT By Bill Griffith Friday, May 5, 1995 Runner's World called it "the country's best-kept road racing secret." And the local road racers turned out 2,500 strong yesterday to contest the 12th running of the James Joyce Ramble yesterday over a scenic 10-kilometer course that winds through Dedham. Blasting through miles with names like Finnegans Wake and The Dead, Tim Gannon of the Boston Running Club won the race -- and the New England 10- kilometer championship -- in a time of 29:55. The New England championship designation drew the region's top local runners, and the times reflected it as the top 50 finishers all broke 34 minutes. Runner-up was Dave Dunham of the Central Mass. Striders in 30:01. The women's winner was Julie Peterson of the Boston Running Club in 34:23, followed by Mimi Corcoran of CMS in 34:55. Race director Martin Hanley ("nine months of work and it was over so quickly there wasn't time to savor it") had his stamp all over the race, from the two dozen members of the Screen Actors Guild spaced along the course, in period costume, giving Joycian readings. Before the starting gun, Hanley annually calls for a moment of silence for human rights, this year for the victims and relief workers in the Oklahoma City bombing. |
