As usual the words of Joyce stand the test of modern time...
“By his monstrous way of life he seemed to have put himself beyond the limits of reality. Nothing moved him or spoke to him from the real world unless he heard it in an echo of the infuriated cries within him.”
We're in planning for our 36th annual event which celebrates the endurance of the human spirit ( 4/24). It's a competitive 10 K national championship running event called the James Joyce Ramble at the Endicott Estate in Dedham, MA.
In 1989 we decided to partner the race with a freedom of expression mission in support of writers repressed and imprisoned for speaking out against tyranny. We chose a relatively unknown Czech playwright, Vaclav Havel, held in a prison by the Soviet proxy government in Prague. That spring we presented hundreds of names on petitions to the Czechoslovakia mission at the UN in New York in protest of the treatment of him, and courageous men and woman like him. Within a year Havel was released and became the first democratically elected President of the Czech Republic as the Soviet Union dissolved.
Even in these hours of democracy sheltering in dark cellars there's hope for humanity to rise up, overwhelm and crush this persistant evil. Do not despair.
